The U3A movement is non-religious and non-political and built on three core principles:

Membership

• Open to all in their third age (not defined by age but life stage).
• Supports local learning and community contribution.
• Welcomes anyone interested in joining.

Self-help Learning

• Members create and run groups on topics of interest.
• No qualifications needed or given.
• Learning is for enjoyment and mutual growth.

Mutual Aid

• Each U3A is independent but aligns with Age Action principles.
• All members contribute voluntarily.
• Funding comes from membership fees kept as low as possible.
• External funding only when it supports independence.
